The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) held a webinar May 7, 2020 addressing frequently asked questions about germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) or germicidal UV light. The compelling topic prompted over 3,000 people from 59 countries to attend the 4 hour long live virtual event. It was the highest attended event of its kind in IES history. The webinar is now available online to IES members.
Since 1906, the IES has sought to elevate themselves above other professional lighting and engineering organizations through a dedication to cultivating the most diverse collection of illumination professionals. The collaboration of engineers, architects, designers, educators, students, contractors, distributors, utility personnel, manufacturers, and scientists has been the key to their success. The IES is widely accepted as the technical and educational authority on illumination. They effectively disseminate recommendations regarding good lighting practices through publications, webinars, and seminars. Their goal is to compile the research and knowledge of industry experts so that their collaborative results may be implemented in lighting practices for the betterment of the general public.
During this time of pandemic-induced information surge, the guidance of professional entities such as the IES is particularly essential. Rampant misinformation is available in any Internet search result, so it is important to rely on trusted experts to filter out the informational ruckus. Reputable professional lighting designers and design-build contractors are looking to the IES for reliable data and independent testing, regarding the use of germicidal ultraviolet technology to inactivate bacteria, mold spores, fungi or viruses.
